We have talked about walking in purity, walking in integrity. Now the context for this, as you well know, began in chapter 4, as we began to look at the practical instruction of the Spirit of God through the apostle Paul for living the Christian life, for walking through the world in a way that honors the Lord.

One is a positive command in verse 8, “Walk as children of Light.” The second is a negative command in verse 11, “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness.” So darkness and light are set against each other. Now the text compares light and darkness obviously. For this reason it says, ‘Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’” But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.

Would you turn in your Bible to Ephesians chapter 5? We ended up last week at chapter 5, verse 7, and so we will pick up the text at verse 8 and I want to read the section from Ephesians 5:8–14 as the setting for the message today.Įphesians 5, starting in verse 8: “For you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Now we have been working our way rather methodically and slowly through the book of Ephesians, and so we’ll go back there this morning.
